1st week of term - 13th Sept 2010

This is the 3rd day and we are showing signs of deep mental and physical exhaustion. Following up absent students - it's the new college policy... 85% attendance in the first 4 weeks or you're out!!! I regretted calling some students - they should know we started on Monday and would you believe it, some are actually still on a holiday! Honestly!

It's good to see quite a number of familiar faces - they're here because they like our site and because of our 'good teaching' and our friendliness -so we were told.

Stanhope is quieter now - maybe it'll perk up within a short while ... it's only the 3rd day. I miss the group of 'chatty' students along the corridor enjoying their break - 'chetorid?' 'khubid?' 'mersy, khubam' etc, etc... and no more tea lady. This afternoon, one of my afternoon students was making the tea for fellow students who then put some money in the bowl put out for honest 'customers' .

Services for students such as Learning Centre, Student Services haven't showed up (yet?), this is assuming they are coming at all this academic year. We are the forgotten site.

Still we do our duty and quite often beyond our teaching role to the extent of asking students not to park in the staff car park. This does not happen at the bigger sites where there are security staff to deal with unpleasantries.

The days are shortening. I may not park round the back of the college building this winter because it's pitch dark out there in the winter months and can be quite spooky. Parking has become less of a problem at the front because quite a few members of staff have been relocated to the new state-of-the-art building up at Wood Street.

It's early days but it might be just the two of us full-time staff at Stanhope after 4 o'clock on certain days which is a pretty grim thought. We shall see.

Tempurung 25th - 29th July, 2009

The obligatory sunset shots at Tempurung.

Can't resist the waves....

Enjoying the slightly turbulent sea. What do you think of the 'karate-kid' praying-mantis pose?

Edible jelly fish abound.
Delicious prawns ...........

................. and crabs at Tempurung.

Tenom 22nd - 25th July, 2009

Stayed at a very reasonably priced hotel in town - plumbing not too good though. Convenient location + accessibility to 7-11 a plus factor for Jeremy and Daniel. They like their Squishy.

Jeremy, Daniel with cousins Ah Soon (Godfrey) and Vincent and uncle, Edmund.

Dinner with family in Tenom.

With the family.

Semporna - 4th - 9th August, 2009

Old-fashioned ice-cream vendor - two huge thermos flasks containing ice-cream placed on either side of the polystyrene box with the cones nestled in between. My first taste of ice cream many many years ago in Sapong/Tenom came from a similar thermos.

Barrow-boy (one of many in Semporna) waiting to load bananas onto barrow for delivery to a banana stall. Very hard work for little hands.

Two chaps dessicating coconut in the background using motorised 'graters' - a far cry from the manual grating.

Yummy!

Barbecued seafood...

Yummy yummy!

At the dried sea creatures market.

Dried cuttle-fish - sotong.

Home-made cakes anyone?

Serious case of not-putting-suncream on!!

The divers are back.
