This is the 3rd day and we are showing signs of deep mental and physical exhaustion. Following up absent students - it's the new college policy... 85% attendance in the first 4 weeks or you're out!!! I regretted calling some students - they should know we started on Monday and would you believe it, some are actually still on a holiday! Honestly!
It's good to see quite a number of familiar faces - they're here because they like our site and because of our 'good teaching' and our friendliness -so we were told.
Stanhope is quieter now - maybe it'll perk up within a short while ... it's only the 3rd day. I miss the group of 'chatty' students along the corridor enjoying their break - 'chetorid?' 'khubid?' 'mersy, khubam' etc, etc... and no more tea lady. This afternoon, one of my afternoon students was making the tea for fellow students who then put some money in the bowl put out for honest 'customers' .
Services for students such as Learning Centre, Student Services haven't showed up (yet?), this is assuming they are coming at all this academic year. We are the forgotten site.
Still we do our duty and quite often beyond our teaching role to the extent of asking students not to park in the staff car park. This does not happen at the bigger sites where there are security staff to deal with unpleasantries.
The days are shortening. I may not park round the back of the college building this winter because it's pitch dark out there in the winter months and can be quite spooky. Parking has become less of a problem at the front because quite a few members of staff have been relocated to the new state-of-the-art building up at Wood Street.
It's early days but it might be just the two of us full-time staff at Stanhope after 4 o'clock on certain days which is a pretty grim thought. We shall see.
